This year, the Milford High School students and faculty welcomed Michele Butler to the staff. She is currently serving as one of two vice-principals here at MHS. However, working as an administrator is nothing new for her. Before coming to MHS, she was a vice principal for six years at two different high schools in Arizona and also a vice principal and teacher at a middle school in Oregon.
The transition to Michigan and a new school has been fantastic for Butler. “The students and staff have been welcoming,” she said.
Butler has a Bachelor’s degree in human development and family sciences and a Master’s degree in education.
Butler plans on improving MHS by, “collaborating with teachers, students, and staff,” said Butler, “Along with this, comes the support for teachers and students.” Butler wants to work with staff and students to push for academic excellence at MHS.
As of now, Butler is spending most of her time observing how things work here, hoping that in the coming years she will be able to add some great changes to MHS.
When asked how she feels about the new attendance policy here at MHS Butler said the new policy is much more flexible than policies in other school districts.
Butler feels that it, “promotes and supports academic excellence.” She feels that good attendance is something that students need to learn before leaving high school and this is an excellent way for them to learn.
The use of more technology this year, such as Facebook and Twitter, has been questionable among students. However, Butler believes that, “it is important to communicate with students in a way that is convenient and familiar.” She also thinks that it is important that schools keep up with new modes of communication. Butler is excited to see how the use of these new technologies in school affects students and to learn how they improve communication between teachers and students.
Outside of school, Butler enjoys spending much of her time outside. She especially enjoys hiking and riding ATV’s. She has previously traveled to Europe, Kenya, Australia and New Zealand. Butler has always been involved in sports and even served as the Athletic Director at a previous school. Butler is also very busy taking care of and spending time with her 4-year-old son.
Milford is happy to have Butler join the staff this year and hopes that she has a great first year here at MHS.
