In a world full of animation, the Walt Disney studios seem to stand out from the rest.
Since 1937, the Wonderful World of Disney has captured many hearts with their first animated motion picture; “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. As the years wore on, new releases turned into timeless classics.
So after almost 75 years in the making; which is the most favored Disney classic film? How do the more modern movies compare to those of the past?
Social Studies Teacher Erin Don has always loved Disney movies since she was a kid.
“I like them because I grew up watching them. I can also put a Disney movie in and plop my kids down in front of the screen so I won’t be distracted when I do the dishes!”
Her favorite aspects about Disney movies are the original songs and music each film has.
Even though there is a wide selection of Disney movies, her favorite movie is “The Lion King”.
The new movies coming out in modern days though have struck a chord with many.
Disney’s 50th animated 2010 feature film “Tangled” was made using Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI).
Older Disney movies almost always used oil and watercolor to paint their scenes, until technology improved and now all movies are done with some sort of computer program.
Some would say the old pictures looked better; others like the more modern way of making still images move.
Matthew Lavenda, a sophomore, has also liked Disney since he was a kid.
“I’ve liked Disney… basically since I was born!” He likes these animated movies because they send good messages to kids. But if he had to choose his most favorite movie, he would have to pick “Toy Story”.
Since its debut in 1995, “Toy Story” has generated two sequels and a lasting impression inside people’s hearts everywhere. Lavenda says that the best message that Disney sends is “you can be whoever you want to be”.
This message comes up in many Disney classics, including “Pinocchio”, “Cinderella”, “The Little Mermaid”, The Lion King”, and many others.
Lavenda also likes the newer movies too. His favorite character, out of every character in the World of Disney, is Rapunzel, from the new movie “Tangled”.
Comparing the years from the late 1930’s to the modern day, Disney has definitely grown and improved. Expect more Disney movies in the future, such as “Brave”, in theaters summer 2012, and “Monsters University”, a prequel to “Monsters Inc.” in theaters summer 2013.
Animation continues to grow and improve every year with better technology, so prepare for some stunning scenes in the future. From this point on, Disney will only be able to expand.
Continuing the 3D re-release of “The Lion King”, Disney will start off the new 2012 year with four 3D conversions of their highly popular movies, “Finding Nemo”, “Monsters Inc.”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “The Little Mermaid”. “Beauty and the Beast” will be the first in theaters, starting in January with “Beauty and the Beast”, followed by “Finding Nemo” in September.
Starting the 2013 year in January is “Monsters Inc.”, and then ending the year is “The Little Mermaid”, in theaters September 2013.
Kelly Hier, a sophomore, has loved Disney for as long as she can remember. Her favorite movie is definitely “Mulan”. Hier says she likes it because of “Mulan’s” main character of the same name. Mulan is also her favorite character.
“She fought for her country, she’s amazing, a warrior, she doesn’t wait for her Prince Charming, she’s epic, and beast, and boss, and AWESOME!!”
Aaron Campbell, a senior, likes some Disney movies. His favorite movie would be The Lion King, because he enjoyed it as a kid.
Campbell said. “Up” and “Wall-E” were one of the better modern Disney movies. Disney is improving, so Campbell can expect much better Disney movies in the near future.
Disney definitely has improved animation since their first movie with watercolor in 1937, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Even though “The Lion King” tops the charts on popularity poll, many tend to have their own personal favorites.
Whether more people like the old and classic Disney over the newer, more modern Disney, it will always have a special place within our hearts, and The Wonderful World of Disney will stay there for many, many years to come.
