The Martian Brings New Records

“Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.” said Matt Damon who plays Mark Watney in the recent film titled The Martian. This very scientifically correct movie directed by Ridley Scott was based of the novel written by Andy Weir. In the opening weekend the Martian made $58.1 million. The Martian also broke opening-day records previously held by Avatar and Interstellar, drawing a total of over 1.53 million admissions.

The film is about a mission to the planet Mars, one of the astronauts named Mark Watney is thought to be dead after a huge storm. Because of the storm his crew couldn’t find him, they figured that he must be dead, so they made an emergency evacuation from Mars. Watney did survive the storm though and now he is stuck on a very hostile planet all by himself. Due to the small amount of supplies and the fact that most of the technology was destroyed in the storm, Watney must use his head and all the resources he has to find a way to communicate with Earth and let them know he is alive.

Some people when they first see the trailer for the Martian or hear what the movie is about they think it will be boring. I mean for the most part there is only one character. This couldn’t be farther from the truth because of Matt Damon, who deserves major props for his acting. For me he made the movie. On screen he came off as very intelligent and funny.

I also loved the story that was told in The Martian because everyone loves a good hero story. For fear that I’m going to give too much away the ending is very satisfying.

Movie-goers often avoid movies like The Martian because they fear learning while watching a movie. I am often guilty of this too but not this time. One of the reason I enjoyed this film so much was although it had a great story line you also learned about really cool things like space travel and Mars without even realizing it.
Like many viewers of The Martian I had my doubts in the film itself but the movie was thoroughly enjoyable. I fell for the science feel to the movie, the story line, and the superior acting by Matt Damon. I greatly recommend that you see this movie as it is more than worth your time.
