A large part of the nation shows a considerable amount of devotion for television as well as cinematic pictures by watching and participating in an American award ceremony known as the Academy Awards. Although this ceremony with the golden statue has been broadcasted for 88 years, this upcoming 2016 Academy Awards have had a lot of controversy because there are no people of color nominated in larger acting categories. This has led to claims of racism across social media.

On social media, many viewers as well as Hollywood stars, including Danny Devito claim on Twitter the Oscars are racist due to the lack of nominated people of color. “Were a bunch of racists” Devito adds on, “It’s unfortunate that the entire country is a racist country.” Viewers are so outraged by this they have been protesting the Oscars by not watching, as well as posting their opinions on Twitter with the hashtag “OscarSoWhite.”

Although some are outraged and claim the Academy Awards are racist, many viewers disagree. In a Huffington post article, Whoopi Goldberg was interviewed on this topic “The Oscars can not be racist, I have won one.” She later expressed her opinions on the televised program The View  “You wanna boycott something? Don’t go see the movies that don’t have your representation, that’s the boycott you want. To me, we have this conversation every year. It pisses me off.”

Even though, this year’s Oscars have caused abundance of conflict it is still planning to air on February 28, 2016. There has been talk of this controversy leading into who gets to vote for the Oscars. We will see for next year if this claim is true as it will change the televised ceremony forever.
