Captain America Civil War causes rift with audiences
June 9, 2016
Let the record show that I tried to warn you about this earlier this year. Captain America Civil War has taken the Marvel movie franchise into the depths of the comic book world. There have been some controversial changes from the comics too that have upset some fans. However, other fans are now completely confused on what’s going on because they did not read my prior advice and follow the series closely.
Let’s be clear that Captain America Civil War is a good movie, but it may not be exactly like the comics and it is definitely not a movie that is easily followed without previous knowledge of the franchise.
The original comic books has the civil war fought over metal mutant registration. This movie, however, makes it about Captain America’s long lost friend Bucky AKA The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). This upset a lot of the die-hard comic fans who had been following the movie franchise. The reason for this shift in plot is the fact that Disney, who owns Marvel, does not own the X-Men franchise at this point in time.
Another complaint from fans is that the movie did not include the 70 + heroes involved in the civil war, but that would be a little ridiculous considering we would all die before Marvel would finish all of those movies. Despite this big plot shif,t the movie found a good balance of holding to the comics with plenty of Easter eggs and a solid plot overall. That’s not to say that the plot would be easy to follow for those who did not dedicate the time to watch the other Marvel movies. This, unfortunately, limits the movie’s audience base.
Though the movie might be entertaining with all of the CGI and fight scenes, it will not be able to capture all viewers. The introduction of several new characters while the plot unravels the consequences of prior actions from The Avengers is quite the recipe for an enthralling and captivating movie.
Overall, I would say that this movie deserves a 7 out of 10. The acting was solid the fight scenes were great and the plot was extremely enticing. However, the movie’s charms are lost on a few members of the audience who either didn’t take the time to watch the other movies or slept through half of them. Another point that brings the score down of this Marvel movie is the fact that it didn’t carry the same comedic nature we see standard throughout every Marvel movie. The lack of comic relief in such a serious plot make it feel a little bit more like a DC film. I would recommend this movie to any true comic book or Marvel fan, but if you’re simply going to the movies to be entertained I believe there are better options.
