On Oct. 28, 2024, Tyler, the Creator dropped his eighth studio album, “Chromakopia.” With features from Daniel Caesar, Teezo Touchdown, Childish Gambino, Schoolboy Q, Doechii, Lil Wayne, Glorilla, and Sexyy Red, it already has many of positives.
Tyler, the Creator, spends most of the album focusing around his efforts to improve and reinvent himself, similar to Kendrick Lamar’s newest album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.” It also seems like Tyler is trying to improve the younger generation of kids, with lines from the song, “Take Your Mask Off” stating, “You ain’t a thug, you was in drama club, you’s a actor, but now ‘cause gettin’ validation from the dumb and confused. Now you facin’ five to ten ‘cause you had something’ to prove.” The song discusses individuality and how to not get lost in following the crowd.
My favorite song on the album was “Thought I Was Dead.” This song had a feature from Schoolboy Q, who wrote a solid verse. Tyler also dissed the rapper Ian in his verse, following the song, “Hate me”, by Ian. Tyler decided he was not a fan of the path Ian was taking with his music, and in an interview with Mav Carter, Tyler stated, “I hold rap music close to my heart” he continued, “This is weird, and something about it doesn’t sit well with me.” Then followed up with this diss. Overall, I liked everything about this song, from the beat, to the features, and most of it was very enjoyable.
Some of the things I didn’t enjoy about the album were some of his songs on there that were closer to the pop genre. I understand that pop is what Tyler, the Creator is mostly known for, but it’s just not what I like. I also disliked the feature from Sexyy Red, on the song “Sticky.” The verse was more like a sentence or two, and had a horrible flow.
Fans seem to be enjoying the album as well, with the most popular song being “Noid” with 13 Million views on Youtube.
Overall, the album has a lot of positives. I liked some songs, and I liked that Tyler, The Creator turned more toward rap instead of closer to pop like he has done with albums in the past. It had a lot of variety in terms of music genres, including rap, pop, and some that seemed closer to rock. It is safe to say that Tyler, the Creator is going to continue to be a major influence in the music scene.
