Boredom sets in. What to do? You could always give planking a go! Planking has been the crazy teenage fad of 2011. With a few friends and a creative mind, you’re guaranteed to have a good time with it.
So what is planking? Planking is laying very still with your hands to your sides and your legs together, like a plank of wood.
The catch to this is that a person must plank in a odd environment or on an out of place, unique object. This can include anything, anywhere!
From school desks, to restaurant tables, the things you can plank on are endless.
When did this craze begin anyways? According to an article on Gaurdian.co.uk, planking first boomed in England in the late 90s where it was called “The Laying-Down Game”. This game was made up to keep boys occupied and pass the time when they got bored.
From England, the trend soon spread its way to Australia, where the story of a man under the influence planked on a building ledge.
Sadly, in a drunken confusion, the man ended up falling to his death, but to honor his tomfoolery, the people of Australia helped to make planking known worldwide.
“It’s just so spontaneous. I love it!” said sophomore, Maddy Hoeft, with much enthusiasm.
Maddy is fairly new to planking and her initial opinion was that it was very dim-witted.
But one day her friends decided to try the new fad out to cure their boredom, and from then, she realized that idiocy can definitely be fun. Maddy has also heard of a new trend becoming famous: coning.
For a measly dollar, you can give this ridiculous trend a go. When coning, a person will buy a small ice cream cone from a nearby fast food restaurant. Then, when the cone is presented to them, they will simply grab just the ice cream, and walk away.
You’ll need the perfect poker face though to pull this off, and one student at Milford certainly has it. Joey Fenrich, a sophomore, was brave enough to go to his local McDonalds and “cone”.
“The car ride there was just terrible,” Fenrich said as he remembered the buildup of nerves before it happened.
He had driven with a few friends to the Milford McDonalds and even brought a camera to film it with.
Although a ton of adrenaline was rushing through his body, the act was simply done. He took the ice cream and walked away with every sign of seriousness.
“[The employee’s] face was priceless,” Fenrich said.
After he posted his video online, he gained a lot of popularity in school and on YouTube with almost 1000 views of the video already. This is definitley a funny trend. To see how coning or other fads work in action, you can go to Youtube.com for tons of cool and interesting videos to watch.
There’s also a lot of other trends besides planking and coning. For instance, a newer one called “Batman-ing”.
This is pretty much a dolled up version of planking where a person hangs straight down from a ledge by only their feet.
This is done on doors and ledges closer to the ground, but be careful! This one requires a lot of strength!
Batman-ing is definitely not for everyone, it’s more drawn to the daredevils since there is some danger involved. Now this one may seem new, but there is also another trend called owl-ing that is even newer.
Although unknown, owl-ing is just as entertaining as any other trend.
When owl-ing, a participant will “perch” on a ledge, as if he or she was an owl.
This may be the oddest of fads, but still, it’s a source of entertainment for kids. So if a situation turns into a boring bunch of nothing with a group of friends, go out in public and try out some of these wacky teen trends to pass the time! You’re certain to get a confused and amused reaction from the strangers around you.
