The new school year began; students went back to school shopping, learned their class schedules, met their new teachers and classmates and anticipated upcoming events, especially spirit week and the pep assembly that lead up to the big homecoming dance.
This year’s theme was “Carnival.” “We made the theme super easy this year to try and get more students to participate and get pumped up,” stated Junior leadership student Maddy Knapp.
Monday was Circus Pajama day, Tuesday was Tie Dye/Rainbow day, Wednesday was T.V. day: freshman were Discovery channel, sophomores were Cartoon Network, juniors were Nickelodeon and seniors represented Disney Channel. Thursday was You Belong in the Circus day. Lastly, Friday was the classic Class Color day.
Prior to the big assembly, all the members of leadership worked diligently to get everything together and make sure everyone was in for a great time. They planned games, rehearsed for sports, homecoming court, and the national anthem.
“My group had really tried to think about activities that everybody can feel a part of,” said Leadership Teacher Kathy Olgeirsson. “We got a lot of ideas from other schools and even asked people in the cafeteria what their ideas were.”
M.C. auditions were held on Sept. 28. Seniors Jessica Samaha and Dylan Polcyn won and were responsible for directing everyone, announcing games, telling jokes and keeping everyone entertained.
Before the event, Senior Jessica Samaha stated, “This year’s pep assembly will be like no other before it.”
Her statement held to be true. After a long week of building up their spirit, the students of Milford High finally unleashed their excitement at the big pep assembly, which was held on Friday, Oct. 7th. Students and staff filed into the field house and packed themselves into the bleachers. They started off as they do every year, with the singing of the national anthem, which was performed beautifully by Senior Chase Bennett.
“I love the feeling I get when my whole school, kids and teachers come together every year for this one event and sing and cheer together.” Shared Senior Kayla Bicknell. “It seems to unite us all.”
Homecoming court was announced. Sarah Tenlen and Jake Behrend won for the Freshmen. Sarah participates in Spanish Club and Girls Lacrosse. Jake Also takes part in Spanish Club and Lacrosse.
Pierce Millington and Katlyn Boomstra were the two Sophomore winners. Pearce plays basketball and golf, is a member of Spanish club and Mentoring, and participates in youth group. Katlyn likes volleyball, photography and also participates in her church youth group.
Paige Smith and Kyle Hamilton won for the Junior class. Paige is in Spanish Club and Student Council. She also plays Varsity soccer and basketball. Kyle is on the Hockey and Golf team. He loves to go fishing and water skiing.
The nominated Seniors were Charlotte Thomas and Billy Schoenle, Dagny Stark and Kurtis McElroy, Madeline Patton and Brandon Fredericksen, and Morgan Field and Zack Vidra.
Charlotte is involved in Student council, the Mentoring Program, and softball. She plans on attending the University of North Carolina. Billy is in track and football. He plans on going to Michigan State to study marketing.
Dagny plays volleyball and lacrosse. She wants to go to Macomb Community College and play volleyball. Kurtis is in marching band, robotics, and the Mentor Program. He plans on attending Calvin University and Michigan State University for Psychology and Business.
Madeline is on the softball team and plans to go to college for photography. Brandon plays guitar and hangs out with friends. He plans on pursuing a career in computer graphics and film.
Morgan is on the equestrian team and wants to attend Grand Valley State University or Central Michigan University. Zack is on the football team and would also like to attend Grand Valley or Central Michigan University.
At the homecoming game that very same night, Kurtis McElory and Dagny Stark were announced the official winners of homecoming king and queen for the seniors.
“Personally, I thought the jock would win, I was extremely surprised when I found out I did,” said Kurtis. “I haven’t been that happy in a long time.”
Happiness was spread throughout Milford the whole week; and now students have gone back to studying hard and will wait until the next spirit week and pep assembly.
