Cars zoom by and people are bustling in the busy city of New York. But in the rush of the city life, a group of Milford High School students began to learn what it would be like to work for big name companies, which included the NHL Headquarters and the Marriott Hotel Franchise. These students began preparation to become the leaders in the business fields of sports and financing through a New York trip that took place from Nov. 16-19.
“The students had many things that they needed to accomplish,” said MHS Teacher David Ehrlich, one of the organizers of DECA. “They had an itinerary to complete. The main focus was going to different organizations called tracks. We wanted the students to get a glimpse of the world and see what it would be like to intern or be an employee of a major organization.”
Junior Travis Andrud said he enjoyed the opportunity to see how different advertisement agencies were created. “It interested me seeing how different agencies got to where they got to,” he said.
The Businesses taught students what it takes to get into the business after college. “They mostly told us to just get a lot of internships,” Junior Elena Glitner said.
Taylor Law said he learned a lot about bargaining. “They taught us a lot about how their company ran and if we wanted to get into their company what to major in.” Law stated.
Yet they learned too that you don’t have to major in business to be a part of the business field.
Junior Shannon Mulville stated, “Some of them majored in other things, like Social Studies.”
Some students said it was interesting to see how to get into a league like the NHL. It was not all business, however. Students also ice skated in Wollman’s Rink in Central Park.
“The ice rink was cool because in Michigan the ice rinks are indoors but the ice rink is outside in New York,” Law commented.
Some of the other skaters at the rink were impressive.
“I was a little jealous though because there were girls taking lessons,” Glitner said, “They were doing spins and stuff and they were just good.”
Students also had the opportunity to take in New York night life. They saw the Broadway Show: “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”, starring Daniel Radcliff. They also toured Times Square and shopped at many different stores. Other tourist destinations included the top of the Empire State Building, China town, and Little Italy. The city impressed the students with its diversity of attractions.
“It’s one city, but with different parts.” Elena commented.
“You could literally go a block from Wall Street and it would be a different atmosphere.” Junior Travis stated.
While the students loved the experience, chaperones were just as impressed.
“This trip was really something,” said Business Teacher Kaye Sommer, one of the organizers of DECA. “We hope that the students learned how to become more prepared for future internships and learn how to conduct business.”
