The MHS boys basketball team won the KLAA West division title on its home court on Tuesday, beating Brighton, 50-31 to up the Mavs record to 13-1. The boys have had an amazing season with the only coming to Grand Blanc, who has lost two in league play. MHS won the division title for the first time in 14 years.
“It’s the start of what’s more to come. There is a game left and we have the opportunity to win the conference and the district,” said Assistant Coach Dave Gilbert. “It is a fun opportunity and I hope we are not done yet.”
Gilbert was one of the coaches who had the chance to coach this year’s seniors all four years starting when they were freshman. Seniors Chris Orr, Brandon Wallace, Steve Sloboda, Chris Cubel, Gavin Long, and Quinn Sellers are key factors to the team’s success.
“Winning the conference title was amazing,” said Orr, “All the hard work in the off season and in the summer basketball finally paid off.”
When the final buzzer rang, Milford’s group of outrageously dressed fans, the 6th men, stormed the court in celebration.
“We cut down the net and every member was given a piece in memory,” said Orr motioning to his pocket like he had it with him.
The boys will be challenged once again on Friday Feb. 10th when they go to Pinckney to get full bragging rights to the conference title. Their final regular season game of the season is on Tuesday, Feb. 14, home against Waterford Mott. However, because of their success in the season, the boys will be competing in the KLAA tournament for the Association title. The first game of the tournament is on Friday Feb. 17 home against the Central Conference champion. Everyone should come out and support the Mavs!
