Every year, people dress up wearing green shirts, socks, pants, silly hats and painting their faces green whether they go to school like that, crowd the streets for parties or go to work.
Saint Patrick worked his way up through society and became a very noble man who is now forever recognized one day a year. He overcame many hardships in his life like having to work at a very young age almost as a slave.
According to nationalgeograhic.com, Saint Patrick was kidnapped from his home at the age of 16 and was shipped overseas for slavery for mainly herding and taking care of sheep inIrelandfor about seven years. According to folklore, Saint Patrick heard voices in his dreams ordering him to leave and return back to his family in Britain, where he was born. When he returned back toIrelandafter the voice he heard told him to, he became a priest and spent the rest of his life converting the Irish to Christianity religion.
When trying to convert the Irish to Christianity, Saint Patrick was beaten numerously, but thugs that did not agree with his views and goals. When he died inMarch 17, 461he was forgotten but as time passed, mythology came into play and people once again started to recognize Saint Patrick. People started telling stories about him and as they were passed down through generations, myths began to form.
In remembrance of Saint Patrick, senior Lucy Dorer and her family make an Irish dinner every year, always of something different of course. After she spends dinner with her family, she goes out to a friend’s house for an after party where they celebrate and deck out in green.
“On Saint Patties Day, people are just in such a good mood all the time because they know they are going to have fun and celebrate the day,” Dorer stated.
Another event that also happens for Saint Patrick’s Day is the parade inDetroit. There are floats and people crowd the sides of the streets with their faces painted as they watch for the people waving theIrelandflags while enthusiastically parading down the middle of the street.
Senior Taylor McCarthy thinks of Saint Patrick’s Day of everyone wearing green and shamrocks. However, when you think about it, why shamrocks? Saint Patrick used a shamrock, also known as a tree leaf clover, to represent the Christian holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
If the day falls on a weekend, many wear green to school the next day to celebrate or not to get pinched. Back in elementary and middle school more, if someone did not wear green for Saint Patrick’s Day they were eligible to get pinched by others. Saint Patrick’s Day is a memorable day based on a single man’s marking in history.
