After 26 years of success, Paul Schreiber, director of bands at Milford High School decided it was finally time to retire. He has led the band to more than 20 years of state finals, and countless marching band awards during his career. The first question raised was “who could fill such big shoes?”
That’s when MHS graduate Katy Sare claimed the title she has always wanted:Director of Milford Bands.
Sare graduated from MHS in 2004 and while in attendance was a part of the National Honor Society, the choir program, and the band program. She also participated in the winter drumline, where she enjoyed playing the xylophone and chimes. Some of Sare’s favorite classes were Wind Ensemble, jazz band, and advanced chemistry with Maya Kempff, a current teacher at MHS.
After graduating as the valedictorian, Sare attended Michigan State University, where she minored in chemistry, and majored in music. While at MSU, Sare took part in the symphony band, and also helped out area marching bands such asWilliamston High School andOkemos High School.
Sare’s passion for music is generated by the work put into it. “I have always been drawn to music, but I love even more how everyone has to work as one to be able to achieve it,” she said.
Sare then felt it was time for her big opportunity to return to Milford. “It’s home” were her first words. “My family is here, and I really enjoy a community that values education.”
Sophomore trumpet player Brendan Shove believes Sare brings a new attitude to the field. “She’s more proactive and more energetic. We really feed off her energy,” he said.
Drum Major Andrew Mikolaizyk said Sare’s methods are “modern.” “She really knows what younger people want,” he stated.
Sare knows what she wants for the Milford High School Marching Band, and that’s for everyone to experience success.
Although Sare has only been here six months, she has learned enormously from her students. “I’m very surprised with our experienced members,” Sare stated. “They are taking action with younger members and helping them succeed a little more each and every day.”
