It’s senior year, the year everyone loves having fun. So in the spirits of 12th grade, Milford High School holds mock elections. This event occurs in the middle of ever year, where papers are handed out to all the seniors, and they vote who think fits the categories best. Then the winners are featured in a special spot of the yearbook under their categories.
To most people, the senior mock elections are all just fun and games. But rarely, students can find these things pretty harsh or even offensive. The winners do have the choice of accepting or passing by their award, so it’s not forced upon them. Some examples of the categories a student can win are, “Best Driver,” “Worst Driver,” “Most Artistic,” “Teacher’s Pet,” “Class Einstein,” “Best Dressed,” and many others. You name it, and it’s probably already on the list.
After being awarded, the students gather under their categories to take photos for the yearbook. Some could be serious, some could be funny, or even just odd. They even dress up for the photos, depending on what category they’re under. But these photos just add to the fun of the mock elections.
Zoe Neamos, a winner of the “Teacher’s Pet” award, isn’t a fan of what she’s been elected for. “It’s not true,” Neamos says. “People voted based on how I was back in elementary school and junior high.” Nowadays, if you are elected for an award that you don’t want to accept, you don’t have to. The runner up for that award will be given the name. Neamos accepted it being that it’s better than not winning an award at all. “Before you vote,” Neamos adds, “think about whether you really know the person and if they fit the name. People change.”
Gary Zahn, the winner of the award Class Einstein, is extremely proud of what he has been named by his classmates. “This is the award for me,” Zahn says. “The mock elections are a ton of fun, memorable and an overall good experience.” Gary describes this event as “good, clean fun.”
The mock elections are created for seniors to be recognized in the yearbook for their final year of high school. It is supposed to be fun for everyone, although some students may not appreciate what they’ve been elected for. The mock elections have been a part of Milford High School for many years, and will continue on for many more.
