Imagine arriving home late one night. You’re about to eat dinner, as you feel hunger growing inside of you. Your pace increases as you sprint toward the pantry. Only to realize, there is nothing to eat…
This is the life of some people in our community.
Why does this issue remain less prominent in our society? Many people are too busy indulging themselves with Burger King, Mc Donalds, and Taco Bell, to even notice. There are people who struggle to get their food, while others are throwing away their day-old leftovers. It’s easy to complain about not having the food you prefer everyday, but imagine what it’s like to have no food at all.
My friend and I volunteered to help out families in the local community who struggle to make ends meet. Early one Saturday morning, we both attended a local Community Sharing. After arriving, I realized that no one was outside in the parking lot yet. I wondered when the first few customers would begin to pour in.
Eventually people came, and made their way up the sidewalk. The food that surrounded us was in boxes/crates and didn’t necessarily look appealing. I felt sympathy for anyone who would be receiving this food. That’s when reality set in, and this is what I realized.
These people think of Community Sharing the same way most people think of places such as Target, Meijer, and Wal-Mart. This is a grocery store, and it recycles the food most people simply throw away.
The people came to retrieve their food, and we helped them load into shopping carts. They got foods such as: potatoes, carrots, meat, juice, onions, etc. They even got to pick out an unlimited supply of ice cream! Then, we brought the food to their cars and wished them farewell. It was simple, but so sweet.
Community Sharing is a non-profit organization designed to provide less-fortunate members in our society with food. It also helps provide clothing, pet food, and other basic necessities to its members. Community Sharing feeds approximately 310 local families per month, with an average of 17 new families added monthly.
Community Sharing was created in 2004. Slowly after its creation, many churches and other organizations joined together to help out with the program. Community Sharing is convenient for all current residents ofMilford,Highland, Commerce, and Wixom. This program offers assistance to those in need, and helps them develop life skills to cope with their current situation(s).
The type of people that Community Sharing is designed for include: the unemployed, the working poor, low income seniors, people with disabilities, and many others. These people turn to Community Sharing as a last resort, because it helps them put their life back together. Helping out others gave me a feeling of appreciation for the things I used to take for granted.
You can help with Community sharing in several ways. The first way is to volunteer at a local Community Sharing. You can help organize clothes, sort food, or even become employed there.
