As studies have shown, teenage girls have the worst eating habits out of everyone. With teenage boys coming in a close second, it’s no secret that teenagers in general have to worst diets. Here are some simple tips to stay healthy through the hectic school year:

Always eat breakfast

Breakfast starts your day and helps wake up your brain to say it’s ready to work. If you’re having trouble with time in the morning try making breakfast for the whole week Sunday night.

As an adolescent, you need to get 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit everyday, and 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables a day. 46 to 56 grams of protein (preferably lean protein like chicken, turkey, beans, or tofu.) Proteins with less fat content like there are in red meats, tend to drag you down more.

Prepare your own food

Prepare well balanced meals before the week, so when you need it you just grab it. You can do this as an effective way to make sure that you’re getting all the nutrients you need for a day. You can do this by preparing meals on Sunday night or an open night, and cook well balanced meals for the week. After you cook the foods, put them in containers and save them in the fridge so  you can grab food each morning and know it’s going to be healthy.

Keep Active

Along with eating healthy, exercise is an important part of keeping up a healthy lifestyle.

“I try to walk every day and have at least a fruit or veggies everyday,” said Mrs. Peterson.

At Milford, an easy way to keep healthy is to use our amazing fitness facilities. Athletes get a free membership to keep up their stellar performance on the court or the field. In the weight room, you don’t always need to be lifting. A healthy mix of different activities is key. You may want to variate between aerobic exercise like a cardio treadmill or elliptical. Strength training is also a good thing to add to your regular exercise; you can use one of the many machines that Milford has or you can do weight lifting at the squat racks.

Living a healthy lifestyle is harder during the school year than the summer, but it’s not impossible.  Make it a priority so you feel better each day and can have a long, healthy and happy life.
