Counselors and social workers in the Huron Valley School district select a few families every year to help through the holidays. With Spanish Club taking the fundraiser under their wing, teachers at MHS compete against one another to raise money to support these families. They do this by offering students some type of treat as a reward for bringing in money to help the families. From Nov. 11 to Dec. 16, the Cutest Pilgrim and Santa fundraisers have been taking place at MHS.
So far, the event hasn’t been as successful, as previous year said Grisel Alfaro, MHS Spanish teacher and event coordinator, but overall donations are around $300. Due to the event not going as well as planned, Alfaro and Spanish Club members hope that next year there will be more volunteers and new energy to help more families.
“I hope that there is more motivation for years to come,” said Alfaro. Many teachers get really competitive during this competition. Alfaro stated that “Gilbert won’t let go of the Pilgrim crown.”
Fricken is normally Cutest Santa, but Kempff took it away from him last year. This fundraiser focuses on mainly getting clothing to help the families have a warm and fun holiday. “With families helping out families have better holiday,” Alfaro said, “students also learn that they can make a difference.”
