Choosing a college can be a stressful and confusing time period. Milford High has created a night to mitigate a student’s anxiety of deciding where to spend his or her future. College night is an event where many representatives from different colleges and universities all meet up at Milford High to promote their school and answer any possible questions.
On Oct 24, students and parents from all grades (but mostly juniors and seniors) and schools in the area, such as Lakeland, gathered in the small gym to speak with representatives from colleges and universities all across the state of Michigan. With about 70 schools attending, students had the chance to speak with many school representatives and get a better picture of what colleges are looking for and what the college experience is all about.
Brenda Granroth, Milford’s Career Development Facilitator, puts the event on every other year, alternating hosting the annual event with Lakeland. Granroth stated that it is important to come to career night because it saves time with all 70 representatives there. Instead of visiting each college that students are interested in individually, they can attend College Night and get a feel for them all right in one room, instead of touring each school individually on your own time.
Not only is College Night informational, but it also can help students find out what colleges are looking for and get a feel for what the campus is like.
Before college night, senior Katie Carlson thought she knew exactly where she wanted to attend after graduation. But now, Carlson says that she may have a better alternative.
“It was important to go because I thought I already knew where I wanted to go but it showed another option for me out there that was a better fit,” exclaimed Carlson.
Carlson states that she is happy she went to College Night because if she wouldn’t have gone, she would have never known that there was a better school for her. Senior Taylor Cole, agreed with Carlson by stating that “I’m more confident in my choice, it cleared up a lot of questions I had.”
Cole explained that the two schools she was most interested in were Concordia University or Northern Michigan University. Granroth explained that students should come to College Night because “it’s easy time to talk to representatives all in one room.”
Talking to representatives can relieve the stress of choosing where one wants to go after graduation along with career choices he or she is interested in that the colleges and universities offer.
“The best part was learning about all the schools and programs they offer,” stated Junior Briana Bailey. If you are contemplating going to college night next year, it is highly recommended for all grades. It can only help you chose a college and college night will relieve the stress of choosing a college or university you may attend in the future.
