There are many girls in their last year of high school who have been waiting years to attend Prom, only to find out they don’t have any money for a dress. Yvonne Peake, a member of The Green Team, wants to give girls hope that they too, can wear a beautiful dress to Prom.
Girls of any age are encouraged to come into the Milford YMCA on festival day, Sunday April 27, from noon to 4 to try on hundreds of dresses and take home one they absolutely love. Friends are welcome, and anyone can take more than one dress if she wants, as the dresses are generously donated from the Milford community and surrounding areas.
Anyone is encouraged to donate their slightly used or brand new dresses to the Carl’s Family YMCA in Milford by April 12. Dresses must be clean and fit for another night out.
Peake introduced the “Prom Dress Boutique” three years ago as part of the Earth Day Festival in Milford, to try to be “green” and recycle dresses, as well as help girls achieve their dreams.
Peake has been running the “Prom Dress Boutique” for more than three years, but started at Community Sharing before she moved to holding it during the Earth Day Festival. Peake thought it would be a great way to stay “green”, as well as help young girls go to the special Prom dance.
“There are so many young girls that should be able to have dresses and go to prom,” said Peake. “I love going up to Community Sharing and seeing how many young girls would really love to have a special dress, and it was something I hoped would take off.”
Last year, the Boutique gathered more than 300 dresses, and gave out around 200 of those to girls who needed them. The leftover 100 were given to Community Sharing to give out as well as other charity organizations. Peake has a goal of getting 500 dresses donated to the Boutique, and for more girls to go home with one or more dresses, ready to go to Prom.
Peake, because of crunched times in her schedule, was not able to get the word out to the high schools in time before the festival. This year she plans on doing that, and so more dresses will be needed to give away. Remember, reduce, reuse and recycle!
