Student council is in charge of planning and organizing a number of events around Milford High School, yet many students don’t truly know what they do or how they can get involved in the student council themselves. Each class has a council of their own that can vary from year to year. After an application process, the final 8-10 members to serve on the council are elected through a peer based voting system. Once on student council, the group gets to work right away, working with their specific class sponsor (teacher) to determine roles and future plans for the year. The underlying goal for a class council throughout their 4 years of service is to raise money and plan for their class prom senior year. A wide variety of fundraisers are often used in order to raise money for prom including class t-shirts, finals care packages, SAT workshops, or even can drives. All of these fundraisers are planned and executed by individual class student council groups. Oftentimes, the councils meet with each other in a large group setting to share what worked and didn’t work for them throughout their fundraising events, and to pass on their knowledge and success to the grades below them. While planning prom is ultimately their greatest task, student council members are also involved in many outreach programs within the community. Taking part in many community service projects and other ways to represent Milford High School throughout the community is something that many members take pride in. If you want to learn more about your class’s student council, or even get your name on the ballet for next year’s election, students should visit Mrs. Cesaro for more details.
