No matter where you go, there are choices available, whether it’s as small as what you want to eat in the morning or as big as deciding what you want to do the rest of your life. Choices surround everybody in their everyday life and come easy to most of us… but what happens if it’s the life of a child you’re talking about? Abortion, described as the termination of a human pregnancy, was used frequently (and legally), up until the 1800’s. By the 1880’s, abortion was illegal almost everywhere. With abortion comes many circumstances, regulations, laws, and exceptions. Deciding which situations are right and which are wrong is where the topic becomes foggy.
A woman has every right to her body, just like every other human does to theirs, being why abortion is such a debated topic. Being a woman, and also a human, feeling as if I didn’t have a choice for myself as to what I can and cannot do with my body would leave me feeling hopeless. Everybody should have the right to chose what they want to do, or not to do with their body. In addition, making abortion illegal would force women who feel they need help, to find illegal abortion options, putting them in even more danger. As if abortion wasn’t scary or hard enough for women already, imagine a woman going through with an abortion from somebody who isn’t legally trained to perform them. Even worse, women finding “homemade” ways to terminate their child. Everybody has rights to what they want to do, or not to do. Women can all agree they have a right to their body, and nothing will change their mind. Whether or not abortion is illegal, women will continue to have them done, safe or not.
On the other hand, normal abortion cases are much different compared to rape cases. In rape case abortions, the rapist may gain custody of the child. If the government isn’t going to make abortion legal, then at least give the rapist no custody to even lay a finger on their child. I think this is the most messed up piece of the puzzle to rape abortion cases… that a rapist can have custody of that child. Anger and depression comes in waves to the rape victims, knowing that their attacker could possibly be taking care of that baby. Although it may hurt them emotionally, abortion may be the better option to some women and I think every woman has a right to decide what they think is best for their child.
All in all, I think abortion should be legal, mainly because every woman has a choice in her life as to what is best for her and only her. Women shouldn’t have to feel ashamed of themselves walking into an abortion clinic, or even having thoughts about getting one. It’s their choice and nobody else’s. If they think that is best for them, let it be. If people are against it, let it be. But don’t ever make a woman feel less than what she really is for doing what she feels is best for her, her child, her family, and her future.
