Don’t Breathe is a hit in the box office, but is it worth the praise?

The horror genre is difficult to direct and perform as the goal is for the audience to be scared. However, when directors and script writers try too hard to do this the film and acting may come off as cheesy.

 Don´t Breathe is an exception.

Don’t Breathe follows three teens living in a rough area in Detroit who attempt to rob and loot an infamous house owned by a blind, elderly ex veteran man hoping to strike gold. While these teens have already pulled off many successful robberies, they have never encountered something quite like this. Overall, this movie is worth the watch, but still has too many loose ends and unrealistic qualities, even if can be enjoyed for those looking for a good scare.

Jane Levy is well known actress from the television show Suburgatory who plays a troubled teen named Rocky in the film Don´t Breathe. Rocky lives in a household with her irresponsible mother, who remains unnamed and her baby sister, Diddy. However, one of many of the significant others of her mother’s always seems to be there, leaving Rocky to take care of her little sister all by herself. Rocky dreams of succeeding in a robbery in in order to take her sister out of the ‘hood’ and into California where they plan on starting a new life.

A young man experienced in crime referred to as “Money” played by Daniel Zovatto is Jane’s boyfriend and he receives information regarding the blind, elderly man who does not trust banks and has over $30,000 stashed in the house he received after his daughter was killed in a car accident. The third teen, played by Dylan Minnette from many films including the 2015 movie Goosebumps, plays a character named Alex who has looted houses with Money and Rocky before due to the fact he loves Rocky. After breaking and entering the house, they encounter more horrors from the blind man played by Stephen Lang than expected, and they struggle to get away with the money and their lives.

Director Fede Alvarez did a nice job and the box office has responded. Teh film has already earned $120.3 million. This is extremely impressive considering the movie had a budget of 9.9 million. Even major critics seem to enjoy the film. The review site Rotten Tomatoes has an 88 percent fresh tomato score, which for the site means it was highly reviewed. The IMDb has also rated the film 7.6 out of ten! Twists and turns and shocking results leave this one of the best horror movies currently in theaters.

“There is nothing a man cannot do once he accepts the fact that there is no god,¨ says the old man of the film explaining how is able to perform such monstrous acts. The movie continues to get highly rated reviews and is considered a hit in the horror genre.
