Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of one of the star players onMilford’s basketball team? Jacob Lee and Alex Larson share some of the details with us. They give us some insight on what they are thinking before, during, and after a game. You will also learn the details about how the players prepare for a big game.
February 1st,7 p.m., at the MHS field house was the location ofMilford’s big game against Hartland. It was Hall of Fame night and the gym was packed to the brim with students, parents and alumni all hoping to watch the Mavericks win another home game. This was a special night because of the induction ceremony, everyone could feel the electricity in the gym as the game was minutes from tip-off.
While it was chaotic and loud out in the gym, Milford’s locker room was quiet and focused on the game ahead of them. The team looked over the game plan for one last time and took the court as the crowd roared behind them.
“I mentally and physically prepare myself before every game, I like to get a good stretch in and eat a great meal, like hot pastrami.” said Jacob Lee when asked about his pre-game routine.
The game was very tight throughout the entire first half. Both teams were trading two point baskets with a few three pointers sprinkled in here and there. Alex said “I usually play one basket at a time. I try not to get to caught up in what has already happened” The game was extremely close as the halftime buzzer sounded, Milford held a 21-15 lead. As the Mavericks entered the locker room they were feeling excited about the first half performance and felt the energy from the crowd cheering them on.
“During halftime coach always gives us great advice about what we need to do to win the game, then we just go out and execute.” says Alex Larson describing the team’s half time routine. “The entire team works hard all year for nights like this. We know what it takes to win.”
The game continued to stay tight and was very exciting until the very end. Milford hit a late three point bucket to put the team ahead with less than 2 minutes remaining. Hartland had a desperation three point attempt at the buzzer to try and force the game into overtime. The long ball hit the back rim and bounced away as the buzzer sounded. Milford’s fans went crazy celebrating the big win.
In a postgame interview Lee said “I am very excited we won tonight, me and the boys played some solid ball and had some gnarly plays out there.” What do you think was the key to your victory? “Well first I would like to thank the Lord above, and our fans who gave us great energy out there tonight, especially the 6th man group. I love watching those guys do crazy stuff, it really is great motivation!”
Post game celebrations are always a big part of the game. Players appreciate recognition of the hard work and dedication that is put into every victory.
Alex Larson said he has the same post game routine after every big win. “After I celebrate with my team, I like to go to McDonald’s and get a few quarter pounders as my victory meal.”
Coming off this tough game Milford’s schedule did not get any easier as they faced off against Brighton and then Pinckney. Milford kept their momentum going and won both of these games. With some more tough contests coming up the team is focused and ready to win.
