As most sports fans know March Madness is one of the most exciting events that comes around every year. Luckily, this year’s event is right around the corner. Every year college basketball gives us very entertaining television starting in the month of March and ending in early April. This segment of college basketball includes conference tournaments and of course the main event, the NCAA tournament.
Every year March is filled with unbelievable upsets and amazing games that basketball fans will never forget. Fans across the nation are following every game and tuning in to root their team on in hopes of winning a title.
This year’s college basketball season has been quite possibly the most unpredictable season in the history of the sport. Top ranked teams have been falling week after week, making upsets almost become the usual. This means predicting what will happen in this year’s tournament could be nearly impossible.
Many students at Milford High follow March Madness very closely every year. “ I am very excited for the tournament this year, I know already that there is going to be a ton of crazy games to watch.” Said MHS student Gino Wickman when asked about the tournament. “Even though I know any team could win it, I think I have my money on Florida taking the cake this year.” He responded when asked about his champion prediction.
Upsets play a major role in the tournament every year. Last year title favorites and number 1 seeded teams Duke and Missouri lost in the first round, falling to a pair of 15 seeds, Lehigh and Norfolk State. The upsets shocked everybody and really shook up the rest of the tournament.
The teams that perform these incredible upsets are often known as ‘bracket busters’. Every March sports analyst try to predict a bracket buster but never seem to get it right because it is so difficult to do. When Ben Polcyn was asked about his prediction of a bracket buster he replied “I think Wichita State is a team that you should watch for to make some real noise this year.”
MHS might get into March Madness more than any other school because of the great work of Mr. Myers and Mr. Gilbert . When the tournament field comes out they hand out brackets that each student can fill in to let their predictions be known to everyone. These brackets are then stapled to a board in the hall outside Mr. Gilbert’s room. As the games proceed they keep track for you by highlighting which team wins. If you have the best bracket by the end of the tournament you are crowned he champion and have bragging rights until next year. It is suggested that everyone fills out a bracket this year because it is a ton of fun.
Conference tournaments are starting up next week to mark the beginning of the madness. Also, you can tune in along with millions of other viewers in two weeks to watch the NCAA tournament. The tournament is promised to be exciting and you never know what will happen this March.
