It’s that time of year again, the snow is gone, the temperature is rising, baseball is just around the corner and this year’s 2013 Varsity squad has a lot of high expectations.
The start of this season however has already been a rollercoaster with the weather and most recently the resignation of head coach Mike Stevenson, better known as “Skip”, due to personal reasons.
Now that the weather is clearing up and now that Rob Hamilton has taken over the head coaching position, the team is beginning to focus on what they really are looking to do this year; win a district title and make it far in the post season.
Another huge goal for Hamilton and his boys is to restore the name of Milford Baseball.
“We’ve had 4 coaches in 3 years, we just want to get this started right this year, we have the talent and the experience to do really good things”- saidHamilton
Experience is key in having a successful team and with only three seniors leaving last year with significant playing time is a huge advantage to the Mavs.
Don’t let the experience level play a major role in the teams expectations, talent is also a huge plus for the varsity team.
“We’ve got a lot of strong arms and bats this year, quite frankly if we can’t win with this group of guys, I don’t know how we will”-Hamiltonalso stated.
For many players such as Connor Walters, they also believe that they have it in them to do great things
“We do have the talent and I do believe that we will have a good record, but for us we know that the difference between a good team and a great team is mental fixtures and a good work ethic in practice” said Walters
The team knows they can’t be complacent
“Everybody has much room for improvement, there’s only so much talent can do, working hard is going to be a major focus with us” saidHamilton
As for the depth this bench has…
“The infield is pretty set, but there are honestly ten guys I would feel comfortable with in the outfield and pitching isn’t going to be much of a problem either”
The rotation is very strong including Jacob Lee, Alex Larson, Scott Cazabon, and Derek Beslock to name some.
“When you have as much solid pitchers and the depth we have, you know we are capable of doing good things, most of us have also played with each other in the past, so hopefully chemistry isn’t an issue” said Walters
“We’ve got to show what we can do and just work hard; I promise you will see fantastic things from us” he also added
The boy’s regular season is soon to be kicked off.
