Your 2016 NHL All-Star Preview
January 28, 2016
This year’s NHL All-Star format is going to be very different than in previous years. In the past, there have been two different teams, originally being East against West. Now, there are going to be four different teams based on the divisions.
One requirement for each team is that there has to be at least one player from each team in the division. For each team, the fans picked one player from each division, which will serve as the captain of each team. The captains include Jaromir Jagr (Atlantic), Patrick Kane (Central), Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan), and John Scott (Pacific). The rest of the players were selected by the League’s Hockey Operations Department.
Another change to this All-Star Weekend is the All-Star Game itself. Instead of the normal 5-on-5 game with three 20-minute periods, it’s going to be a 3-on-3, one 20-minute period, tournament-style format. There will be two semi-final games and the winners play in the championship game. The winner of the championship wins the All-Star Weekend. There are rumors that Alex Ovechkin will be missing the All-Star Weekend due to injury. It will be interesting to see who will take the place as captain for the Metropolitan Division. The Skills Competition starts this Saturday at 7 p.m. and the All-Star Game starts on Sunday at 4 p.m.
