Many athletes at Milford have dedicated their time and hard work into their sports. Although 50% of Milford students participate in competitive sports, a very small percentage of students continue their sports careers at an advanced collegiate level. An even smaller percentage of athletes have already committed to a college for sports in their junior or senior year. Milford happens to have some incredible student athletes who have already committed to continue their sport at the next level.
College sports move at a faster pace than high school and involve a much larger commitment. Senior Allison Hooks, who dedicated her childhood to playing soccer, committed to play Division-I soccer at the University of Ohio in her junior year. “Playing soccer at a collegiate level is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” said Hooks. “My sister also plays in college, so that just made me want to do it even more,” said Hooks. “I’ve been playing competitive club soccer for over 10 years, so I’m used to the demanding and competitive schedule.” College soccer is much faster and difficult because you could be a freshman playing against a 22-year old. “It will be a long and challenging transition, but I will also learn many lessons. Overall I’m really looking forward to being involved in the program at Ohio and building lifelong friendships”, said Hooks. Her dedication to soccer is very clear that she is ready for the new challenge.
Committing to a college can be a huge relief for many athletes, given how hard they have worked for their opportunities. Senior Gavin Mcbride, is another student who has committed to play Division-I soccer at the Naval Academy. “I am so excited to finally play in college,” he said. “I felt like I had a really good connection with the team and coaches. It was a proud moment for me and my family because I felt a lot of relief committing to a school.”. Mcbride and other students, including senior Calvin University volleyball commit Alyssa Sienko, describe committing to a school as a huge accomplishment. “I felt very accomplished when I committed to Calvin, especially since it was very early in my junior year, ” said Sienko. “It was such a good feeling that all my hard work had paid off, considering I’ve been playing since seventh grade and I finally feel like all that work was for a greater purpose.” Sienko’s hard work and dedication to her sport illustrate that she is excited for her next chapter.
Milford athletes are going above and beyond with their perseverance, time commitment, and incredible athleticism in their sport. Committing to a college for sports whether it be D1, D2, or D3, it is an amazing accomplishment as a student athlete. But, some students have already gotten ahead of the game, setting themselves up for a bright and exciting future!
