Mockingjay part 2 closes the series in an unforgettable way
January 28, 2016
The Hunger Games series we have followed and loved for 4 years has sadly come to an end. On November 16th, 2015 the final movie The Hunger Games- Mockingjay Part 2 was released. This was the second half of the movie in Suzanne Collins’ third book in The Hunger Games book trilogy. I think splitting the third book up into two movies was really a great idea. It gave the directors the ability to expand with more detail without cramming an entire book’s’ worth of plot and character development into one film then just “rolling with it”.
pThe movie picked up right where it left off in Mockingjay part 1 with Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) healing from her attack caused by Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), where he violently choked her and threw her around a room. Her vocal cords are damaged and her neck is bruised after the attack, then she is immediately thrown back into the war against the Capitol. Katniss, Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin), and a crew of other team members enter the Capitol, only to find out it has been set up with a bunch of traps all over the place, provoking Finnick to declare it the 76th Hunger Games.
Since Jennifer Lawrence had appeared in the first film four years ago, her career has skyrocketed and put her right into the public’s eye. I believe that the Mockingjay movie has done as well as it has because she is such an outstanding actress, and she gave all the films a more emotional feel when they could have been easily overdramatic.
The director of the movies, Francis Lawrence, films this movie in almost a hectic way. I felt like it was too hectic to the point where sometimes I didn’t know what was going on because it was moving at such a fast pace. For example, when one of the major characters died halfway through the movie, it was hardly given a second thought. None of the characters stop to mourn them because there just wasn’t any time to.
Throughout the film there were countless numbers of exhilarating scenes. One scene involves tar flooding a building, another scene taking place in the sewers while the crew was getting attacked by mutts. The crew getting attacked by these mutts stand out to me as one of the most horrendous clips the films have ever done and it plays out extremely well.
Mockingjay Part 2 does a nice job giving an overlook on what a war can do to a society. Considering that Mockingjay was the more frail book of the trilogy, it’ ending in the film was great and it really made up for the rest of the weak spots that were in the book.
One thing I did not care for in the movie was that some of the major characters in the previous films like Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) and Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) were not in the film as much as I thought they should be. The director should have cut some time off of those least important characters in favor of giving others more screen time.
Mockingjay Part 2 overall did a really nice job relating to the book. Rumors were put out that the movie was going to “water down” some of the harsher scenes that the book had. Fans, do not worry because the scenes were as tasty as you remember in the book and I assure you that the deaths hit hard. The beginning of the movie I admit is kind of slow, but once the crew enters the Capitol, it becomes an outstanding movie to watch and an interesting story to follow.
