Drake has had a legendary run in, not only the hip-hop industry, but the entire music and entertainment industry. Coming into 2023, Drake has had a whopping 12 studio albums reach number one in Billboard’s Top-100 list, which puts him top 5 in all-time number one albums with names like Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, and even The Beatles.
Drake’s run is far from over, on October 6th, 2023 he released his newest number one album “For All the Dogs”. There was some unrest about this release date though, as it was originally set to release on September 22nd, according to Drake himself via Instagram. But, this most definitely led to even more hype around the album, regardless of if it was good or bad press, views are views, which is something Drake is known to strive for.
“For All the Dogs” is the eighth largest first-day album debut in Spotify history with a mind-boggling 108.6 million streams.
Drake and SZA released hit single “Slime You Out” weeks before the album dropped. This song was one of two songs to reach number one on Billboard’s Top-100 along with “First Person Shooter” featuring J Cole, another incredibly successful rapper of the 21st century.
There are lots of songs that have captivated Milford students within this album. Senior Gavin McBride’s favorite song was easily “What Would Pluto Do?”, an upbeat feel-good song that Drake has often come back to throughout his career and seems to do well with.
Junior Landon Murray hasn’t been able to stop listening to “8am in Charlotte”. This has been widely considered his best song on the album from fans across the country. There is really no chorus or hook in the song but a really mellow and chill beat with very well written lyrics that amaze people with their double and triple entendres that Drake is so good at creating.
Other very popular songs from the album include: “Virginia Beach”, “Fear of Heights”, “Another Late Night” featuring Lil Yachty, and “Daylight” which has a snippet from Drake’s 6-year-old son Adonis.
Every album has it’s failures, even from someone as talented and successful as Drake. Murray and McBride claimed that their least favorite song was easily “BBL Love”, a short interlude that they felt didn’t bring much to the album. This song did the worst out of any song on the album based on streams.
Drake and 21 Savage had a song on the album that was highly anticipated. Most likely because in 2022 they released a collaboration album “Her Loss” that was very successful. This song was called “Calling For You”, it was ranked the worst song on the album by Billboard, mainly due to the fact that they are such a great duo and it seemed they didn’t capitalize on that on this particular track.
Overall, “For All the Dogs” was a huge success, and a great addition to Drake’s incredible discography. He really shows no signs of slowing down and it seems that every album has even more press than the last. It is safe to say the Aubrey “Drake” Graham won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
