2024 has been a major turning point when it comes to the music industry. New artists have been popping up left and right, as well as known artists who have grown into their fame over the years. Chappell Roan has had an uprising like no other, expanding in fame at a rapid pace.
Taylor Swift released her 17 song album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” as well as “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” which contains a total of 31 songs. Other artists such as Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, and Tate McRae have released albums this year that have had a positive reaction from the public eye.
The Grammys are coming up this February, which means some tough decisions are going to be made when it comes to the nominees and winners. The big question that is being discussed here is: who do the seniors of Milford High School believe will win? The following information is from students who said that they are constantly listening to music.
Alana Banier, senior at MHS, said that she listens to music for about “half of her day”. Banier believed it is a tie between Carpenter and Roan for who’s popularity levels have shot up the most within the year. “They were already in the field for a long time, but their careers have really exploded over this year,” she said. From a less pop artist standpoint, 17-year-old MHS student, Hana Scripture’s top three artists of the year are “Noah Kahn, Tate McRae, and Meghan Moroney.”
Out of those artists, Scripture believes that Noah Kahn will be the artist to be nominated, and that it is likely that he could win a Grammy. Scripture believes that the reaction to whoever wins a Grammy this year “will not be intense because the upcoming artists are extremely popular.”
Scripture says that because of social media, the public has an idea of who has the biggest claim to fame, “Therefore there will be no shock between the nominees.” This is contrary to Banier, who presumes that the reactions will be “very intense.” She continued by saying “a lot of ‘Swifties’ will want Taylor to win.”
At the same time, if Swift does win, people would be upset about someone new not getting limelight,” she said. This is similar to what Addison Scigliano believes. Her top artists of this year are Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, and Conan Gray. These artists have all released albums that have performed significantly well, permitting them a higher chance of being nominated. Both Oliva Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter have used the popularity gained from their newest albums to their advantage and are truly formulating their media image.
Scigliano says that the result of seeing who wins the Grammys makes her feel “super happy for them,” enticing her to “listen to (their) music more.” This is a common feeling when less familiar artists win. Having an award as major as a Grammy brings additional attention to the artist’s music, as well as discovering them as a person beyond their art. Scigliano thinks that the winner could very well be Olivia Rodrigo, with the help of her new album, “Guts,” and her attendance to the Guts Tour exploding as of late 2023 and early 2024.
Based on what has been observed through speaking with students, there are many artists who students believe deserve to win a Grammy. All of these contrasting opinions imply that Feb. 2, 2025 will have the world on their toes, wondering who will officially become the most successful face behind the music industry in 2024.
